The Royal Observatory and the National Maritime Museum have teamed together to create this comprehensive site. To increase accessibility to both the Observatory and museum, the site acts as an information source with news updates; opening times; and exhibition details provided on the site. In terms of research, the site provides access to the museum's catalogues and archives. The National Maritime Museum's collection contains over 2 million objects related to seafaring; navigation; astronomy; and time measurement. The museum is committed to improving access to its collections. Over 7,500 objects are now available online, with a further 1,000 available by the end of 2003. The online collections include objects from the ceramic; jewellery; firearm; edged weapon; sundial; globe; quadrant; and commemorative medal and coin collections. A selection of map; chart; and other navigational collections will be available by Winter 2003. The site links to Maritime Art Greenwich, which offers a searchable database of selected paintings, plus in-depth commentary on some of the major themes of maritime art. The museum also holds a film collection of over 1500 films dating back to 1910. It contains some unique views of coastal resorts and ports in the UK and abroad since the start of the twentieth century. The site allows users to access the catalogue of films and search the collection. The site also details the collections of the Caird Library in which an extensive range of books; periodicals; manuscripts; and atlases, cover every aspect of maritime affairs.
