Introduction to the Macospol wiki

Introduction

This manual explains the Macospol platforn infrastructure. Before one starts to add and change things to this Wiki it is wise to first read this manual, as well as having a look at some of the texts here.

Signing in

On mappingcontroversies.net one needs to be signed in (through 'Sign In' at the top right of your screen) before one can edit or add things to the platform. Also, when logged in, below the group pages on the left side of the screen, extra menu options become available.

Webs and topics

The general organization of this wiki is in webs and topics. Topics (also known as pages) are the basic units of content. A web is a container for topics and other webs. A web can be compared loosely to a folder on your computer, whereas topics are like the individual files.

URL's to this wiki normally contain the web and topic. For example, the URL to this topic is http://www.mappingcontroversies/Home/MacospolManual, which designates the topic Macospol Manual in the web Home.

The Macospol wiki has the following webs:

Webs with content:

  • Home - The Macospol web, contains the content of the Macospol work packages;
  • Demoscience - The Demoscience web, contains the content of demoscience.org, i.e. resources from 'out there' (the world) which might be useful for mapping controversies;
Administrative Webs:
  • Main - This web is used to store user details and user groups;
  • System - Contains documentation for Foswiki, the software powering this wiki;
  • Trash - Trashcan, normally not accesible for mere mortals.

Users

User levels

There are six levels of access.

The general idea is, that new users register themselves via the user registration process, and then the local administrator adds her/him to the editors group. For example, user John Doe from Amsterdam might register as JohnDoe. Now, one of the people in Amsterdam Admin Group assigns JohnDoe to the Amsterdam Edit Group. Now, John Doe may edit pages in the macospol web.

Site administrator Site administrators have no limits whatsoever.
Macospol Administrator Administrators can edit anything in the Macospol Web (Home) and the Demoscience web
Group administrator These are the respective administrators of each group / work-package. They can edit anything in the Macospol web, but also can assign editors and other site administrators for their group.
Group page editor Can edit any page. Several groups of page editors exist, one for each work-package.
Authorized user Authorized users are users that went through the user registration process. Authorized users can be assigned rights by adding them to one of the above user groups. By default, authorized users have no additional rights in the Macospol web (Home)
Guest Guests can only view. Guests are users that do not log in.

User groups

User groups are defined to give specific groups of users certain rights on the wiki (as describe in the access levels above). A user group definition consists of a page (topic) in the Main web. All group pages can be found on Wiki Groups. Each group page contains a comma-seperated list of users (or other user groups) that are members of the user group. For further details about access control, consult the manual on AccesControl.

The following user groups are defined:

Per group, the following user groups exist (where 'City' is replaced with the city name):

  • CityAdminGroup - The group admins
  • CityEditGroup - The group editors
Examples: Amsterdam Admin Group, Amsterdam Edit Group.

Classification

Both the Home web (Macospol related) and Demoscience web (Resource related) have their own classification scheme.

Macospol Classification

One can add a page to the Macospol platform classification by specifying a title in Platform Add. (This will be used as part of the url to access that page.) Make sure the topic name starts with 'Platform', e.g. PlatformMyNewTopic. When the topic name has been specified, one clicks 'Create!'. You will then be redirected to a page where you can enter the title of the page, a short description, a text, and assign the page to the appropriate categories en subcategories.

Make sure to always assign the page you made to your specific workgroup (Category ItemGroup). All other categories and subcategories are optional.

When a page has been added to the platform and assigned one or more subcategories it will appear in Platform Overview. The classification works here as a filtering system. When one clicks a subcategory, only pages which have been assigned to this subcategory will be listed.

Editing a page can be done by clicking 'edit'. The title, short description, text, and classification will be shown in edit boxes. Some pages however should not be edited except by programmers. These pages include: Platform Overview, and all the group overview pages, basically all pages showing a classification scheme should only be edited by programmers.

One might notice the Macospol groups are not visible on Platform Overview whilst they are in the categories when one adds or edits a page. This is because we gave each group their own overviewpage (which can be found on the left side of the screen). When one clicks one of these overviewpages, only those pages which are classified as belonging to that specific group are shown. On these group overview pages the same classification scheme as on Platform Overview will be shown but it now only shows categories and subcategories that are actually used by the workpackages - thus the importance of assigning a page to your specific workgroup. Of course, these group overview pages will be empty until pages have been added to the platform (by using Platform Add) and categorized as belonging to that group. For now, we have added three dummy pages which will be removed once real content has been added.

When a particular filtering action (a click in the classification or group pages) results in only one item, the system automatically redirects to that item: the classification is not shown anymore, but the item is (think of it becoming navigational instead of filtering).

For technicians: Data Forms are used to put structured input fields on certain topics, and filter those topics based on the values assigned to those fields (see the Resource Overview). Platform Wiki Application gives a listing of all parts of our Macospol platform classification system.

Changing the Macospol classification

The primary level is defined in the form: Platform Form. All fields with a name that ends in 'Tags' are primary classifications.

The secondary level is defined in the topics that are named after the primary level categories.

An example:

The field UsersTags defines a primary level category, types of users. The possible values for this field (the second level categories) are defined in a topic with the name Users Tags.

To add or change something to the classification one goes to Platform Form and clicks 'edit'. On this page one can delete, rename or add a primary classification. Make sure the primary classification always ends with 'Tags', otherwise the filtering systems will not pick it up. To delete, rename or add a secondary classification one clicks 'edit subcategories' for the relevant primary classification on Platform Form.

Demoscience Classification

We have imported demoscience.org into the Demoscience web. We have used the top categories as primary level classifications and lower level categories as second level classifications. As you might notice, the classification system looks a bit too large. Marieke (our designer) is working on a solution. Important to realize is that 1) the design has not been implemented yet, and 2) demoscience.org only allowed for a hierarchical, single category, classification. When the design has been implemented the resources can be added to multiple categories and subcategories just as on the Macospol web.

One can add a page to the Demoscience classification by specifying a title in Resource Add. (This will be used as part of the url to access that page.) When the topic name has been specified, one clicks 'Create!'. You will then be redirected to a page where you can enter the title of the page, a short description, a text, and assign the page to the appropriate categories en subcategories.

When a page has been added to the platform and assigned one or more subcategories it will appear in Resource Overview. The classification works here as a filtering system. When one clicks a subcategory, only pages which have been assigned to this subcategory will be listed.

Editing a page can be done by clicking 'edit'. The title, short description, text, and classification will be shown in edit boxes. Some pages however should not be edited except by programmers, e.g. Resource Overview.

For technicians: Data Forms are used to put structured input fields on certain topics, and filter those topics based on the values assigned to those fields (see the Platform Overview). Resource Wiki Application gives a listing of all parts of our Demoscience platform classification system.

Changing the Demoscience classification

The primary level is defined in the form: Resource Form. All fields with a name that ends in 'Tags' are primary classifications.

The secondary level is defined in the topics that are named after the primary level categories.

An example:

The field ToReadTags defines a primary level category, types of readings. The possible values for this field (the second level categories) are defined in a topic with the name To Read Tags.

Related pages

Each page that links to another page in the Home web or the Demoscience web, will appear as a related page in the page it is linking to. For now there is a subdivision between what linked from the Macospol web and what linked from the Demoscience web. Later on we can subdivide the related things further according to the classifications of those things.

FAQ

The Macospol Platform classification has a FAQ, which still needs to be written. There should be FAQs for visitors as well as site authors, e.g., how to start a page (which is called a topic), how to insert and resize pictures as well as wiki formatting more generally.

How to use images in a topic

Unfortunately image uploading is not as ease in FOSWiki as it should be. The steps are as follows: when you are editing a page, click on the icon of the paper clip at the top of the input form. This will allow you to upload your image. After uploading, click on the icon of the post card next to the paper clip and make a link to the file you just uploaded. There is more info on attaching files here: File Attachment

How to add add a page to the gallery and how to change the image in the gallery

Each topic on this wiki has a field called 'GalleryImageUrl' (accessible by clicking 'edit' at the bottom of a topic). The gallery is automatically constructed from topics which have such an image URL specified: these images are shown in a grid and linked to the respective topics.
  • When a topic should not appear in the gallery, make sure the topic's field GalleryImageUrl is empty
  • When a topic should appear in the gallery, enter a URL to an image in the GalleryImageUrl field of that topic. E.g., one adds an image to the topic (see previous FAQ entry) and saves the topic. Then, by right-clicking the image one can select 'copy image URL'. Again, one clicks 'edit' at the bottom of that topic, and pastes the URL to the image in the GalleryImageUrl field.

How to add bibliographic references

There is a page on the wiki where all bibliographic references can be added: Macospol Bibliography We ask you to add all your references there manually, in the same format as the others. The table with references will be automatically sorted when viewing the saved page.
